she really reuses her toilet paper?

Yes, really. I guess it goes without saying that she only reuses it when she can dry it out. If it's been used for another purpose, then I guess she flushes it, but I have never asked her that. The whole thing is something that is not talked about very much. My family makes sure we never have to use her bathroom.

And I thought my grandmother was bad for the things she did. For example, she kept the wrappers from sticks of butter to use to grease pans with. She had stacks of butter wrappers in her refrigerator. She also wore old clothes and just kept mending them. Even socks. And she and my grandfather were not poor. When they finally moved out of the old shack that they had lived in that was falling apart, they paid cash to build a new house elsewhere on their property.

I think it has something to do with having lived through the depression.

Thought so. It seemed that you presented the dichomoty of her being so thrify vs. really having wealth. Many who live through the Depression are like that.
