Don't they both have campaign planes? Don't those count?
I don't like McCain and I am supporting Obama, but I'm still not sure that the comparison is very informative. How many miles are driven on those vehicles? How do Barack and Michelle get around? Is car ownership worse than using a car, for example if a service comes and picks them up? Is it wrong to own a car? Does owning multiple vehicles prove wealth? Does owning few prove lack of wealth? I own two. Does that make me a fatcat?
Alex, Did I in any way suggest that a family couldn't possibly get by with one car? When I was a child, my family had one car. Obviously it can be done. Hell, a lot get by with no car. What I suggested is that owning one car doesn't necessarily mean a family is less well-off or less wasteful than another family with more cars.
I think the campaign planes are owned by the parties, so they are no listed.
Owning multiple cars might be considered as wasteful when you consider the resources used to manufacture a car. Car have to be shipped to various destinations which requires energy. Every car made and shipped will add to greenhouses gases and global warming, even if you only drive one at a time, or let them languish in a garage.
But, the thing the struck me was not that they had two or three vehicles, but 13 and a plane and 8 houses! That's extravagant, people.
zf, Ok, point taken about materials going into car manufacture and about the expense of shipping a car. The McCains probably bought their cars new, too. I should note that my two cars were both purchased used, as are at least half of my clothes, some of my furniture, and lots of other items that I own. I doubt that the same can be said for either the McCains or the Obamas.
Liz, there's no need to get defensive. I simply answered your question regarding how Michelle and Barack get around.
You have to be pretty rich to have thirteen cars and eight houses, so I think that means they're pretty well off. I don't think they're trying to say McCain is necessarily wasteful. I think they're saying is really rich, and since he's constantly claiming to be "one of us" this shows the contrary.

Two cars! My oh my. That might make you a fat cat. I am amassing bikes, instead, after selling my car 14 years ago.
Liz, many families only have one car. They seem to get around just fine.

So, how does one librarian drive 2 cars ;-)
