Freezing Blackout

The power went out at 10:00 PM last night and stayed out until 8:30 this morning, on one of the coldest nights of the year. That was unpleasant, and it made me realize that I am not really prepared for long power outages in winter. The good news is that the power failure happened after I roasted a chicken :-)

I kind of like when the power goes out. There's something a little exciting about it (I know I'm a nerd). I haven't been in a blackout since I moved to Anchorage though. My parents live out in the middle of the woods outside of Palmer, and we had them all the time when I was a kid.

You're lucky. I was in the middle of making omelettes and fried potatoes for dinner when our power went out last fall. I had half-cooked food strewn all over the kitchen.

The best thing we've found for power outages is the little crank-up lantern we bought. You have instant light to help you find the candles, lighters, and fresh batteries for the other flashlights.

You know what we went through with Hurricane Ike this year and I would STILL take no power in a zillion degrees and 100% humidity over no power in the Canadian winter! Please tell me you have gas heating! That is awful.

Do you have any LED lights? Black & Decker makes a really cool LED/CFL lantern that puts out a lot of light and is very mobile. I wanted to marry ours I loved it so much.

Yes, I have gas heat, but it needs electricity to make it all work. So, no heat. I have some LED lights, but I need a crank or radio-powered radio.

Yeah, we didn't realize that we were radio-less until it was too late.

We only had the FM radio on Z's mp3 player, or a boombox that required 6 D batteries. I went out the next day and bought a small AM-FM radio that runs on 2 AA batteries. We always have a good supply of AAs.

The power hadn't gone out here in decades when it started to go last summer. I filled a drawer in my sideboard with candle & sundries after the first time.

Also, mmmmm...parsnips!

I'm not really prepared for long blackouts, aside from having lanterns and candles - it's hard to be in the city. I freaked when the microwave burned out last week. "You mean I have to actually get pots dirty to reheat food?! Are we still in the Bronze Age?!"
