1. Formal induction into office.
2. A formal beginning or introduction.

I showed it to my class. I tried not to cry. They got into it--even the kids who were well-known for being Republicans. That, as much as anything, gave me hope for the future of our country.

It seems to me that the word inauguration has to do with omens. I recall reading about the hiring of diviners or augers to check things out before taking an important office.
