Air Conditioning Sucks (most of the time)

Maybe it's because I spent my childhood sweating in summers, or maybe it's because air conditioning wasn't widely available back then - at least not in my hometown, or maybe it's bad experiences with over-air conditioning that makes me hate it.

Why is it that some buildings are so cold that, if it were winter, people would complain? No one would tolerate that extreme cold in winter. I can't even go to a movie in summer without adequate warning: I've been stuck in freezing theatres too often. I almost got frostbite once when I wore sandals to a movie (sandal-wearing is a recent development. It has taken years for me to feel comfortable exposing my toes in public). I walked around a large Texas city with a jacket just so I could combat the buildings that had been transformed into refrigerators, including the conference centre, which had an ice rink in the middle of it, right beside the Starbucks!

I always feel slightly sick after spending too much time in heavily air conditioned buildings. At work, I have to take sun breaks and I feel like a lizard lying on the pavement trying to raise my body temperature.

Just give me a fan and a cold drink and I'll be fine.

I love having AC! I don't have it in my car and it SUCKS! I do agree that some places, ESPECIALLY movie theaters go overboard with the AC and it's freezing in there!

My work has the air conditioning cranked high enough to freeze hell over. But this is preferable to having no airconditioning at all. I hate it when it's so hot the air thickens (you know what I mean).

I love love love air-conditioning. When other people walk in a room and say, god, it's cold in here, I am just getting comfortable. The temperature usually called "room temperature" makes me sweat. Air air air conditioning, the only thing that makes summer in the city liveable.

In the winter: the barest minimum of heat and a ton of blankets!

I am so with you on this. Here's the link to prove it: http://drippingwithsarcasm.blogspot.com/2004/08/air-conditioning-ha-more-like-medieval.html

G, that's exactly what I'm talking about.

ZF, I agree about the AC. I love hot and humid weather. And I HATE having to wear winter clothes in the summer because of the frickin' AC. I never go anywhere in the summer without a sweater or jacket, and I try to dine at places that have patios or other outdoor seating.

we use ours when it gets really humid, and I'm glad we have it for those days

I've gotta join the "I love AC" camp. I grew up in the Deep South where things started to get hot and sticky by May, and by June, stepping outside was like stepping into a blast furnace. Somedays, it take a conscious effort to breathe.

Of course, now that I live in the Northeast, I'm starting to relish those humid days. But I shall not betray my past! AC forever!

I despise AC not only because of the movie theatre effect, which irks me year round, but because my first summer in the lovely city of Ottawa I was working in the parliament buildings with their funny air conditioning, and I discovered something I wish I hadn't: air conditioning gives me nose bleeds. Big, messy, monumental nose bleeds.

I hate AC too. My bedroom is currently so cold that I have to sleep with two comforters and a thick crocheted blanket. Absolutely ridiculous.

And movie theatre syndrome?? Hate it. I shouldn't have to carry a jacket with me in the dead of summer!

Really, if we're going to use AC (which some people will absolutely refuse to give up) maybe we should use it to take just the humidity out of the air, instead of it being cold enough to keep your yogurt chilled while sitting on your desk. Personally I don't mind heat and humidity, but a little AC would make it comfortable for the rest of the office.

Still hot? Drink some cold water. And quit yer bitchin'! ;)

I think that I should mention here that I DO use my AC in the car and at home--but minimally. I just hate it when it is 72 degrees inside on a 90 degree day. My AC at home is usually set to 84 degrees, so it does run some when it gets hot. In the car I usually just use it to cool the car off on hot, sunny days. While I'm driving, I just roll the windows down.

I notice that some of the folks on here bragging about not using AC at all live waaaay North. To those folks, have you considered that it gets hotter in some locations? ;-)

My husband and I both work in restaurants. When it's hot, you have to have a place to break your sweat or you'll go insane.
Central air was the best investment we ever made. I prefer having my windows open for the fresh air, but on hot, muggy days you can't beat AC.

I didn't realize that air conditioning would be such a controversial topic.

I really didn't so much mean that the weather is different in NE Ohio than it is in Ontario. But it is hotter in some parts of the U.S. Have you ever been to south Texas in August? I have. And, yes, I was the nut who wanted to sit out on the patio when it was 103 degrees and humid. But that's just me. And I think anybody who lives there would want air conditioning.

AC is one of the main reasons whiy I don't go to movie theatres any more. Middle of summer and I need my Carhart jacket to watch a damn movie. Plus, we seem to be more than willing to sacrifice the earth and its environment so that a few drops of sweat don't run down our bodies...

I couldn't agree with you more. Here in Minnesota, our summers are short enough as it is. I don't understand why we whine about the cold all winter, only to turn the thermostat to blizzard-with-60-mph-wind as soon as the temperature tops 60 degrees.

The building I work in only has AC ( no heat at all) I have a heater I keep underneath my desk that runs all year round. I dont use the AC in my car, put the windows down and have the sunroof open. I do have the AC running at my house because I have 2 dogs that are in door doggies and I dont need my pc to burn up that stays on 24/7.

"Turn the AC off in your home and leave it off."

If I did this (as when I had no choice, during blackouts), I would never sleep, never work, never have a kind word for anyone, and spend my entire day and night complaining.

People who hate A/C are lucky, because they can tolerate heat! When Americans ask me how I could move to Canada because it's so cold, I mention how I couldn't tolerate the heat in Florida in March.

I'm sorry to add greenhouse gases to the environment, and I try to be mindful of that in the rest of my life choices (I don't even own a car!) but some of us, A/C is a necessity.
