Diet Coke is an Atrocity

With apologies to those of you who actually like this shi...stuff.

The first time I tasted Diet Coke, I really believed that I was being poisoned, or at least that this substance was about to induce vomiting. First, there was a gag reflex. And then I started clawing at my throat like someone being suffocated. I ran to find an appropriate place to spit it out. It tasted so bad, I asked the person I was with to taste it for me.

The conversation went something like:

me: "Taste this."

them: "Why."

me: "I want to make sure I am not being poisoned."

them: [sips; hands it back]: "Tastes just fine."

me: "You can't be serious. This is what I imagine carbonated embalming fluid tastes like."

I remember thinking that if I were blindfolded and forced to taste and identify this carbonated atrocity, I would have made the following guesses:

1) antifreeze
2) liquid aluminum
3) refrigerant
4) aftershave
5) WD-40
6) melted vinyl
7) my grandmother's urine
8) someone's IV drip
9) pond water
10) some sort of truth serum forced on people before interrogation or being sent to the gulag

It reminded me of my first cigarette. I felt like I might throw up or that my chest would explode - in other words, the universal sign that your body is trying to tell you that you are poisoning yourself.

Besides, it contains aspartame, a substance that is banned in children's products in Europe. And, just to show you how omniscient my comments were, I offer this:

"Aspartame is made of 3 components, 50% phenylalanine, 40% aspartic acid and 10% methanol (wood alcohol). In the body methanol breaks down into formaldehyde (embalming fluid) and formic acid." (source). By the way, formaldehyde is a neurotoxin and a carcinogen.

That made me thirsty.

I don;t like diet soda though they sneak aspartame in yogurts! I can;t eat it at the moment and prefer real sugar instead!

I think the term is TMI...sorry, I still eat hot dogs, too. I figure that I have weaned myself from everything except the minutest amount of alcohol(and that was no small feat, trust me,) I have to keep poisoning myself someway or I will live forever. That is even scarier than drinking embalming fluid.

2 girlfriends of mine swear by this stuff...they refer to it as sweet nectar, so there...

But it's not even sweet!

Silly! That's why you dilute it with Jim Beam!

Maybe you're allergic to aspertame and that's why your throat started closing. I avoid artificial sweeteners as often as I can.

After using Splenda for a month it started making me sick.

Stick with water if you want a low calorie drink.

I see no difference between Coke, Diet Coke, Vanilla Coke, Lime Coke, Pepsi, Fanta, Seven Up, etc... they are all shi...stuff...

I can't believe you're actually so worried about aspertame... how about all the sugar in the original Coke?

I guess I should have mentioned that I don't drink coke, or any other soft drink, for that matter.

I agree. Diet soft drinks are disgusting. And I avoid aspartame like the plague!

Glad to hear that. I have recently discovered a juice maker and I love it! It also made me realise how much crap they put in all the juices they sell in convenience stores as they taste NOTHING like the real deal.

Mmmm..drink up!!! I really do try not to drink pop, especially the diet stuff.

That aspartame really gives me the shivers!

JUST EAT THE DAMN SUGAR AND LIKE IT! (unless you're diabeteic and can't...don't want to be insensitive)

I'm not a soda drinker. When I want caffeine, it's in a coffee drink; when I want cold caffeine, it's in a cold coffee drink, or unsweetened ice tea (the latter earns me a LOT of strange looks, now that I'm in Texas).

That being said, from what I've read things like sugar and butter are actually less harmful to the human body than their chemically created alternatives.

But, I will agree: diet coke tastes like ass.

I have always disliked Diet Coke, especially with that "Bite" in the back of the throat it gives you.

If I am dying for a cola, I now stick with Diet Pepsi or Diet Rite; but more often than not, I drink ice water, home brewed ice tea or Crystal Lite.

Thank you, Singlegirl.

Some people are more sensitive to the bitter components of artificial sweeteners. Personally, I don't care either way, and drink only diet. (As far as I'm concerned, calories are the bigger evil.)
